Venues & Directions

The meet venue, at the Marine Corps Base Quantico, is location about 35 miles South of Washington, DC via US Interstate 95. Instructions for entering the base on each days is posted below. 

Area Airports  
  • DCA – Reagan National Airport (25 miles from hotel) 
  • IAD – Dulles International Airport (40 miles from hotel) 
Area Train Service 
If using Quantico Station, photo ID’s are required to return to the station via MCB checkpoint.
 
Bus Service 

Bus service is available from the Pentagon to the Dumfries Commuter Lot which is within walking distance of the Hotels. 

Model Event: Friday, November 10

Between 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, the model event will be in Prince William Forest Park starting near Turkey Run Ridge Campground. There is a $7 per vehicle park entry fee.

Model Event Maps
We are providing three model maps for you to print: 1:10,000, 1:7,500 and 1:5,000. Model event maps are available here. Controls will be located at each mapped location in the park.

Note:
  • Model maps will NOT be included in your meet packet and they will NOT be available at the model event. You are responsible for printing out the model map you plan to use. 
  • The start and finish locations are indicated on the map but, there will not be any physical markings (no streamers/controls) in the park marking the start and finish.

Model Event Parking
Parking will be in the parking lot at the end of Turkey Run Road. To avoid the risk of receiving a parking ticket, please do not park along the park road. We encourage carpooling.
 
Day 1: Saturday, November 11

The first day of competition will be held on the Beaver Dam Run map, covering Marine Corps Base Quantico's Training Areas 8A and 8B, with the start and finish at The Basic School, Camp Barrett. There is ample parking in this area and the finish area is spectator friendly. The location is on a Federal Military Reservation and all competitors and spectators must pass through a security checkpoint located one mile west of Interstate 95 at Exit 148 (MCB Quantico) - remember a government issued I.D. is required to get on the base. After clearing the checkpoint, Camp Barrett is 5 miles farther on MCB-1 and MCB-2. The route will be clearly marked with QOC Orienteering signs. Drivers are advised to adhere strictly to the speed limits on the Base. Allow 10 minutes to clear the security checkpoint and an additional 15 minutes to reach Camp Barrett. Dress for the weather as there will be no indoor facilities available in the start/finish area. Restroom facilities will be available. 

NOTE
  • All competitors and spectators must pass through a security checkpoint at Exit 148, Marine Corps Base Quantico. A government issued I.D. is required to get through the gate and onto the base.
  • There is a 1.1KM walk to Yellow-Blue start location from Finish Arena; 900 M from Parking Area
  • There is a short walk for White start location from Finish Arena

Day 1 Directions from the Hampton Inn Dumfries/Quantico to Event Center and Parking

  •     Take Old Stage Rd to VA-234 S
  •     Turn left onto VA-234 S
  •     Slight right to merge onto I-95 S toward Richmond
  •     Take exit 148 toward Marine Corps Base Quantico
  •     Use the right 2 lanes to turn right onto Russell Rd
  •     Once through the security gates continue onto MCB 1
  •     Turn left onto MCB 2
  •     Turn right onto Belleau Ave follow signs to parking

Spaghetti Dinner
Our Q3 Anniversay Dinner will be a spaghetti and salad feed starting at 6:30 pm on Saturday, November 11th at the American Legion Post 28. Our guest speaker for the evening will be Paul Westermeyer, a historian from Marine Corps University. We're excited to have you join us!

Directions from the Hampton Inn Dumfries
  • Take Old Stage Rd to VA-234 S. 
  • Turn left onto VA-234 S and merge onto I-95 S toward Richmond. 
  • In 2.3 mi, take exit 150B to merge onto VA-619 W (Joplin Rd.) toward Prince William Forest Park. 
  • In 2.6 mi, turn right onto Liming Lane and immediately turn left into the American Legion parking lot.
Destination: American Legion Post 28, 17934 Liming Ln, Triangle, VA (capacity 80).

Dinner Tickets: Tickets for the Spaghetti Dinner will be included in your meet packet. Ticket sales will end once we've reached our capacity limit of 80 people. 

Day 2: Sunday, November 12


Day 2 of competition will be held on the Hangman Tree map, covering the base's Training Area 16B. You will be entering the base on Russell Road at the same security checkpoint as on Saturday. Allow 50 minutes for travel and parking. There are no indoor facilities at the start/finish area, but portable toilets will be available. Spectators should bring folding chairs for seating.   

NOTE 
  • All competitors and spectators will need their government issued I.D. to access the Marine Corps Base.  
  • There will be a 250 M walk to start.
  • We will provide a staffed and covered area for a bag drop at the finish arena.
  • Make sure you observe the speed limits on the base and allow at least 30 minutes to arrive at parking after passing the security checkpoint.

Day 2 Directions from the Hampton Inn Dumfries/Quantico to Event Center and Parking

  • Take Old Stage Rd to VA-234 S
  • Turn left onto VA-234 S
  • Slight right to merge onto I-95 S toward Richmond
  • Take exit 148 toward Marine Corps Base Quantico
  • Use the right 2 lanes to turn right onto Russell Rd
  • Once through the security gates continue onto MCB 1.
  • Go straight through the traffic light at 1.7 miles, travel another 0.6 miles, and turn right at the intersection to continue on MCB 1 (watch for the QOC Orienteering sign).
  • Continue on MCB 1 for another 5.7 miles to N Hangman Tree Rd (watch for another QOC Orienteering sign).
  • Turn right on N. Hangman Tree Rd and travel approximately 3 miles until you see the parking guide.
Parking: Parking will be on the right side of North Hangman Tree Road. Do NOT park on the left side. It is a narrow gravel road. Later arrivals need to plan for a 0.5 mile walk to the arena. Please exit the event by turning around on the road. If you cannot turn around on the road, you can drive north to a turnaround point near the arena. 

CARPOOLS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED DUE TO LIMITED PARKING. Please drive slowly and watch for fellow orienteers on the road.
